Our Story

The Bal-last Interlocking System™ was invented by a pressure sewer system owner turned sales and service provider and installer. I served as a municipal sewer superintendent for 22 years.  I was involved with many sewer construction projects with force-account and contracting projects consisting of various wastewater system construction methods.

Municipalities are often limited by funding and equipment. This led to many ‘creative’ solutions to many obstacles. In 1985, facing a lack of funding for ‘conventional sewers’ we introduced our community to low-pressure sewers.  This led to a long association in the pressure industry.

My experience with installing pressure sewer systems led to another 23-year career with design, installation, and service of pressure sewer systems. A key focus of this sales support focused on proper installation and development of a ‘certified installer’ program. This program was geared toward the reduction of warranty claims and the standardization of best practices to improve customer satisfaction.  Many pressure sewer providers have since built this type of training into their programs.

While training installers on the best methods to install pressure sewer systems, a constant question arose over and over. How to ballast the tank properly and quickly? I saw the need for a solution and devised what is now a commonly sought after solution.

The birth of the Bal-Last ™ design took place in 2011. This process involved
the use of plastic molding systems to create the enclosure and shape to fit
these pump basins. These shapes were designed to conform to the pump basin’s
ribs for an interlocking structural bond. These shapes needed to be uniform and
able to be filled with high strength structural concrete. The design is based
on the OEM required ballast meeting specific weight and dimensions.

We locally sourced mold designers, mold makers and stepped into the world of manufacturing.  We secured product patents and established manufacturers and suppliers of our product components and assemblies.

The Bal-Last™ products have become a reliable and simple go-to solution for designers and installers.  Installations are located along the east coast of the United Sates and westward to the Great Lakes.  Installers repeatedly ask only for pumps with the Bal-Last ™systems.  These are used on single installations and in major municipal or developer markets.  (Find out more on our ‘Stories’ pages.)

Products are sold directly to distributors who then sell to installers and end users.  We ship from our warehouse, pallets via LTL freight or flatbed loads. Pallets are complete with 6 sets (standard) complete concrete filled systems ready to install on grinder pump bases.  These systems provide over 100% of ballast needs following installation and proper backfilling in fully saturated soils (see definitions page).
